How does the event work?

The SMVA X FSMB Trackmania Student Cup is a race against the clock on the game Trackmania 2 Stadium. The tournament uses a knockout format. In one session each participant sets a time at their assigned setup and the slowest driver at the setup will be eliminated. The elimination process will repeat until the best driver is decided. After that the points are allocated to the drivers based on their position.

These sessions repeat multiple times, with the players assigned to a setup mixed each time so that everyone gets to fight against each other. Later in the tournament you will be fighting against drivers similar to your skill level. This matchmaking process is repeated a certain number of times until finally a winner is decided for every skill level.

To match up drivers into a match with a similar skill level we utilize a custom designed ranking system.

In the first sessions (qualifying phase) the players are assigned to their setups randomly, so that everyone gets to drive against each other. Here they earn points which then decide in which rank they will put in the next phase.

After the qualifying phase the drivers are split into 3 ranks:

Top-Split (highest rank), Middle-Split and Bottom-Split (lowest rank). Now will follow multiple rank-in phases, which contain multiple sessions where the drivers in their rank compete against drivers in the adjacent rank, e.g. Top-Split against Middle-Split, or Middle-Split against Bottom-Split. The goal of this is to challenge the drivers in their rank by intentionally matching them up with stronger or weaker drivers. This forces the points of the drivers to fluctuate, which result in either ranking up, ranking down or staying in their rank. These sessions of the rank-in phase are repeated for the tracks provided, making the drivers move from rank to rank, until they settle on their final rank.

Once the ranks are finalized, the tournament moves into the finals, where the drivers compete only against drivers in their rank, which ultimately decides the best driver for every rank. The final standings are determined only by the points earned in this phase.

After the finale the best drivers of each of the 3 splits will earn the trophy. During the event, all participants also get a chance of randomly winning merchandise from the SMVA or FSMB. Merchandise will be available to purchase at the event too.
